Case Study
How Evergreen Event Rental delivered 120+ double-sided artificial hedges to define the red carpet at the ESPYS 2024 in Los Angeles, creating photo backdrops and managing crowd flow overnight.
For the ESPYS red carpet, we had to carve out clear zones for celebrities, press, and camera crews. We brought in over 120 double-sided, UV-resistant artificial hedges and installed them all in one night. The result was instant, defined spaces that stood up to the California sun and a full day of camera flashes.
Overview
The ESPYS celebrate the year's best in sports. The 2024 ceremony in Los Angeles meant a major red carpet event, where managing the flow of celebrities, media, and cameras is just as important as the awards. The production team needed a rental partner who could pull off a clean, sophisticated design on a tight, overnight schedule.
They called us at Evergreen Event Rental for our artificial greenery. Our job was to provide the physical structure—modular, double-sided hedges—that would create visual and functional boundaries on the carpet. This wasn't just decoration; it was about building usable space from scratch under serious pressure.
The Challenge
The main problem was space. On a packed red carpet, you have celebrities walking the line, photographers and camera operators who need clear shots, and reporters doing interviews. These groups can't mix. The client needed a way to separate these zones without using ugly barriers or ruining the event's elegant, lush look.
They also needed attractive, consistent backdrops for photos and broadcast. Plain walls or fabric wouldn't work. The solution had to be green, dense, and look perfect from every angle—because cameras would be pointed at it from both sides. Everything had to be delivered, set up, and taken down in the narrow window between other vendors finishing and the first guests arriving.
Our Solution
We worked directly with the client's in-house designer. The goal was a layout that used our product as a functional tool, not just a set piece. We settled on a plan using our modular artificial boxwood hedges.
The hedge panels are UV-stabilized, so the color won't fade in direct sun or under broadcast lights. They're also double-sided, so both the celebrity side and the camera side look lush and finished—no ugly backing. We suggested a mix of 4-foot and 8-foot tall panels. The 4-foot units created lower boundaries that defined space without feeling like walls, while the 8-foot panels worked as tall photo backdrops. The modular design let the client's team tweak the layout on-site to fit the exact space.
Implementation
The timeline was tight. All installation happened overnight to avoid messing with other vendors. We delivered over 120 individual hedge panels to the Los Angeles venue. Our team was on-site for the load-in and setup.
Delivery and pickup were included, so the client didn't have to arrange separate logistics. Our crew handled getting the hedges from our Southern California warehouse, moving them into place on the carpet according to the plan, and securing everything for a full day of action. After the last award was handed out, we came back to break down all the panels, pack them, and clear them from the venue, leaving the space exactly as we found it.
Results
The hedges created instant, defined areas. The production team got the clear zones they needed: a path for talent, dedicated space for cameras, and pockets for media interviews. The green 'wall' looked solid on broadcast and in photos, giving a rich, consistent backdrop.
The design held up. Because the hedges are artificial, they stayed perfectly shaped and colored from the first arrival to the last departure, despite the heat and constant activity. Nothing wilted, nothing needed watering, and no maintenance was required during the event. For the client, it meant one less thing to worry about on a complex show day. They got a predictable, durable element that did its job and was gone on schedule when our team came back to pack it all up.
