Qualcomm Custom Maze

Qualcomm’s event team needed a custom artificial hedge maze built around a central stage—on a real event timeline, with real logistics. Evergreen Event Rental designed, delivered, installed, and picked up a modular maze made from UV-resistant hedge panels, sized to match the venue footprint and how guests would move through the space.

Overview

For the Qualcomm Custom Maze in San Diego, Evergreen Event Rental was brought in to handle the rental infrastructure for the event’s main feature: a custom artificial hedge maze built around a large central stage for a presentation.

This wasn’t a simple “drop and place” rental. The maze had to look clean on camera, feel immersive at guest level, and go up fast on an event schedule. The project ran over two months, from design development through delivery, onsite setup, teardown, and pickup.

The Challenge

The client’s brief was straightforward: create a maze experience people would actually want to walk, while keeping the stage as the anchor. So the maze couldn’t function like a standalone scenic piece—it had to support guest circulation, production access, and a presentation moment without feeling like the layout was forced.

Custom maze builds also come with real constraints. Panel counts, panel sizes, sightlines, and stability shape what you can do. And in San Diego, outdoor conditions add another variable, so the materials had to keep their look under sun exposure and long event days.

Our Solution

We designed a modular hedge maze using rental-friendly components that could be staged, assembled, and removed without drama. The final layout used more than fifty single-sided 5' x 8' hedge panels and almost one hundred double-sided 4' x 8' hedge panels, so the maze had visual density and clean “walls” from multiple angles.

To keep the maze looking consistent through the event, we specified UV-resistant materials—one of those details that decides whether greenery stays even and camera-ready. The modular approach also let us fine-tune the maze geometry around the central stage while staying within what can be installed reliably onsite.

Implementation

Across the two-month timeline, we handled design alignment, panel planning, and logistics so install day could stay focused on accuracy and speed. With a maze, inches matter. Long runs have to stay straight, corners need to read sharp, and entrances/exits should feel deliberate.

On installation, our team delivered the hedge panels to site, assembled the maze to the approved layout, and adjusted connections as needed to keep walls continuous and pathways clear. After the event, we managed teardown and pickup, clearing the space quickly and keeping the production schedule on track.

Results

The finished build created instant, defined zones—guests weren’t just walking past décor; they were moving through a built environment that framed the central stage and supported the presentation.

From a rental perspective, the modular system kept the design true to the concept while still working for event-day realities: fast assembly, predictable teardown, and a clean look from multiple viewing angles. The client got a genuinely custom build without having to coordinate separate vendors for design, delivery, setup, and pickup.
